Famous
Military Personalities |
|
The
Aviation Art Gallery is proud to announce Four exclusively
commissioned limited edition Bronze Sculptures by the well
known sculptor Peter Close featuring famous military personalities
and leaders from an era that shaped our history.
Magnificently
finished, each Bronze Sculpture has been painstakingly worked
by master - sculptor Peter Close. Using hundreds of authentic
photographs for reference, Peter has created wonderfully
faithful Bronze Sculptures of Four of the most famous personalities
from World War Two. Intricately worked in clay until totally
life - like, each bust is with the greatest care, individually
cold cast in Bronze. When this delicate and lengthy process
is complete and the cast is set and removed from the mould,
the artist sinfully burnishes each individual Bronze figure
by hand to a radiant finished patina worthy of the Louvre.
Working in his own dedicated studio, the artist Peter Close
personally completes every process on an individual basis,
and entirely by hand.
Each
Bronze Sculpture is personally engraved with its own unique
edition number by the artist, who also engraves his name
on the base of every work. Each life - like sculpture is
creatively mounted on an individual wooden plinth, displaying
what is undoubtedly a unique and quite remarkable collector's
piece.
Highly
Restricted Availability
The
Bronze Sculptures in the Bronze Collection are made entirely
by hand, and issued in highly restricted edition sizes.
Following completion of the last sculpture in the edition,

high and weighs in the region of 11Kgs, and is beautifully
and safely displayed within a unique presentation box. Designed
and created solely for this collection, each presentation

the sculptures. With gold embossing on a striking solid
black exterior and elegantly hand - finished with a soft
cushioned interior, each box has been gracefully engineered
to provide the durability for lifetime storage.
Inside

Wing
Commander Guy Gibson VC, DSO, DFC.
At
the outbreak of World War II Guy Gibson was a pilot with
83 Squadron, being awarded the DFC during Bomber Command’s
first raid of the war. After completing his first tour of
duty he avoided his rest period by transferring to Fighter
Command, where as a night fighter he obtained four kills
and a bar to his DFC Promoted to Wing Commander in April
1942 at the age of 23, Gibson rejoined Bomber Command, flying
172 operations as commander of 106 Squadron. In March 1943
he was chosen to command the newly formed 617 Squadron,
created specially to destroy the hydroelectric dams in the
Robin. This unique, top secret ‘bouncing’ bomb,
developed by Barnes Wallis, was designed to be dropped on
the water surface from a precise height from a bomber flying
at exactly 230 mph, bounce into the dam wall, sink, then
explode at a depth triggered by a hydrostatic fuse. On the
night of 16/17 May 1943, Gibson Led his force of specially
modified Lancasters, making the first low-level run at the
Mhhne Dam. As other crews followed, Gibson, with identification
lights ablaze, continually circled to draw the enemy’s
fire until the dam was successfully breached, before leading
the surviving Lancasters to attack the Eder Dam. Gibson
was awarded the Victoria Cross. After a brief lecture tour
of the USA, Gibson returned to operational flying in july
1944, but on 19 September he and his navigator both lost
their lives when their Mosquito crashed in the Netherlands
while leading a raid as master bomber, In the words of Marshal
of the RAF Sir Arthur Harris:” Guy Gibson was as great
a warrior as this Island ever produced” |

Generalleutnant
Adolf Galland Knights Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and
Diamonds "Dolfo"
Galland started flying gliders at the age of fifteen, rising
to command the "Rictofhen" fighter wing in the
Spanish Civil War. He fought in the Battles of Poland, France
and Britain, leading the famous JG26 "Abbeville Boys"
in the west. Promoted to inspector General of Fighters in
November 1941, he had total responsibility for all day and
night fighters throughout the Luftwaffe. Galland was the
youngest General in the German High Command, but his disagreements
with Goering's tactics led to his dismissal. Reverting to
combat, flying the Me262 leading the JV44 jet wing, he became
the only General in history to lead a squadron into battle.

Feldmarschall
Erwin Rommel Erwin
Rommel, the most respected German military commander of
World War Two, commanded the 7th Panzer Division during
the invasion of France. Promoted to general he commanded
the new Afrika Corps, successfully driving the British 8th
army out of Libya, but was eventually defeated at El Alamein
in 1943. Approached in 1944 to join the plot to assassinate
Hitler, Rommel refused and suggesting Hitler be arrested
and brought to trial. Now in command of the German Army
in France, even Rommel was unable to halt the allied advance
following D-Day, and in July 1944 encouraged Hitler to surrender.
But Hitler had discovered Rommel was plotting against him
and offered the general suicide, a state funeral and protection
for his family, or trial for high treason. Erwin Rommel
took the honourable decision.
