The
long balmy summer days of 1940 provided perfect flying
weather for the vast armadas of Luftwaffe bombers
and fighters wreaking havoc over the southern counties
of England. As summer wore on the enemy stepped up
their attacks on airfields, radar stations and shipping
in the Channel, leaving RAF Fighter Command stretched
to near breaking point. The Battle of Britain was
at its peak; air - fighting reached an unimaginable
intensity.
Throughout
the months of July, August and September the destiny
of Britain and the free world hung in the balance,
resting upon the shoulders of a tiny band of youthful
fighter pilots. Desperately short of aircraft, spares
and supplies and with its young fliers heavily outnumbered,
this heroic band of young men flew from dawn to dusk
in defence of their homeland until the drove off the
Luftwaffe from their precious skies. Their courage,
skill, determination and sacrifice will forever be
remembered for the battle they won. They rescued Britain
from Nazi invasion and turned the tide in the Second
World War.
Fondly
remembered for its part in the victory is the remarkable
Hawker Hurricane. This tough, stable fighter bore
the brunt of all operational flying during the the
epic air battle, no fewer than four - fifths of all
air victories being credited to the pilots of this
outstanding fighter aircraft. Without the Hawker Hurricane
the battle would have been lost.
In
his unrivalled and inimitable style, Robert Taylor
has miraculously captured the mood so typical of those
long frantic days. Fresh from yet another hectic combat
high over the south coast, Flight Lieutenant Tom Dalton
- Morgan and his wingman, hurry their Hawker Hurricane
Mk1s of 43 Squadron back to base at Tangmere. More
fuel, more ammunition, a sandwich and a cup of coffee,
and with the familiar roar of the Merlin engines they
will be airborne again, ready to engage the next wave
of Luftwaffe raiders.
Robert
Taylor's supreme talent, together with inside knowledge
of the Battle of Britain gained from years of association
with distinguished Battle of Britain pilots - including
in - depth discussions with Tom Dalton - Morgan are
combined in the creation of this emotive image, also
featured on the cover of fighter ace Tom Dalton -
Morgan's long awaited autobiography. Now reproduced
as a highly collectable limited edition print signed
by fellow Battle of Britain pilots, this unique package
of matching numbered print and book offers a wonderful
opportunity to all aviation art collectors and enthusiasts
of the Battle of Britain.

This
outstanding new first edition hardback book is the story of
Tom Dalton - Morgan, a man determined to fly and who achieved
his ambition by being accepted for pilot training by the RAF
in 1934. He flew in the Battle of Britain and was one of the
few fighter pilots to shoot down Luftwaffe bombers at night
in a single engined day fighter. He subsequently flew many
operations over occupied Europe and was awarded nine British
and foreign decorations. He retired from the RAF in 1952,
moving to Australia to join the Weapons Research Establishment
in Adelaide, eventually becoming a range controller at the
Missile Testing Ground, Woomera. He reluctantly retired in
1982 after reaching 65 years of age.
With
his usual zest for life, he bought a sheep farm which he ran
with his son for a number of years before eventually retiring.
His retirement was spent with his wife, alternating between
Australia and England where they continued to attend many
reunions of "Old Boys". He sadly passed away on
18 September 2004, leaving behind the manuscript for his fascinating
autobiography. At his expressed request it has now been published
by Griffon International and released in conjunction with
Robert Taylor's emotive painting, "Tommy Leader"
Matching
numbered certificate of authenticity included.

Helpful
information regarding our Limited Edition Prints
Limited
edition print:
An
edition of identical prints, numbered sequentially and individually
signed by the artist, having a stated limit to the quantity
in the edition. Following publication the printing plates
are destroyed. Almost all the aviation art and aircraft
prints featured on this website are authenticated with the
original signatures of distinguished military personnel.
Artists
Proof:
An
old tradition of reserving a quantity of prints for the
artist's use, usually equal to about 10 % of the edition.
In the early days of printing, these prints were the only
remuneration the poor artist received. Proofs are signed
by the artist and numbered showing the quantity of Artist's
Proofs issued in the edition. Because of their highly restricted
number, Artist's Proofs are sold at a higher value than
the regular prints in the edition.
Publishers
Proof:
A
quantity of prints, not always announced or issued at the
time of publication, usually equal to no more than 10% of
the edition. These are reserved for the publisher's use,
mostly for donation to Museums, Service establishments,
Service Associations, and the like. Quantities of Publishers
Proofs, sometimes issued with a supplementary print, may
be made available to collectors either at the time of publication,
or at a later date, depending upon availability.
Remarqued
print:
A
print issued with an original pencil drawing by the artist
in the margin, each numbered out of the quantity of individually
remarqued prints in the edition. The quantity of remarqued
prints in any one edition generally is between 25 and 50.
Each remarque drawing made by the artist is slightly different,
thus making each print totally unique. Remarqued prints
may be available at the time of publication, or announced
at a later date, depending upon the artist's work load at
the time .Please be aware that Remarque prints can take
up to six weeks for delivery. An artist remarqued print
is the ultimate collector item in terms of reproduced work.
Companion
print:
An
additional print, usually issued with smaller dimensions,
published to compliment a limited edition, and usually issued
at the same time.
Matted
(or mounted) print:
A
print fitted into an acid-free or conservation matt (or
mount), ready for framing.
Original
drawing:
An
original work individually drawn by the artist, completed
in pencil, ink, or other medium, and personally signed by
the artist. Being an original work each drawing is unique
and different.
Certificate
of Authenticity:
A
certificate issued by the publisher stating the total quantity
of prints issued in the edition, confirming authenticity
of the signatures, and in the case of a limited edition,
inscribed with the matching unique number inscribed on the
individual print. Collectors are advised to keep certificates
safely as a future means of provenance. All our aviation
art and aircraft prints are issued with a certificate of
authenticity.
